NO NEWS IS NO NEWS
There doesn't seem to be much happening with the Cult or the Doors/Riders on the Storm. The Cult played some dates in 2006 and Billy Duffy, Billy Morrison & Matt Sorum are currently playing with Circus Diablo. Morrison & Sorum are also part of the core group of Camp Freddy, with whom Duffy has performed.

Lack of activity along with life/lack of time have dictated that this site hasn't been posting much news of late, but the musical legacy of the Cult remains timeless

BILLY DUFFY TOURING THE UK WITH DEAD MEN WALKING
Billy Duffy performed throughout the UK during the fall with Dead Men Walking - Mike Peters (The Alarm, Coloursound), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats), and Kirk Brandon (Spear of Destiny).

THE CULT ARE FEATURED IN A NEW BOOK
The Dark Reign of Gothic Rock: In the Reptile House with The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus and The Cure by Dave Thompson has just been published by Helter Skelter Books, and it features The Cult as much as (if not more than) the other bands featured in the oh-so-long title. It's a great read with a ton of information and memories - read more!

LIVE CULT (MUSIC WITHOUT FEAR) DVD
The much-anticipated DVD featuring live footage from Los Angeles is now available! more info

IAN TO FRONT THE NEWLY-REFORMED DOORS
It's official: the Doors have reformed with original members Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger, along with Ian Astbury on vocals and Police drummer Stewart Copeland (oops see Update 2). Astbury seems the logical choice to replace the legendary Jim Morrison, as evidenced by the 2000 VH1 Doors reunion/tribute special. The new group has played a few gigs and Manzarek has said "this is the permanent Doors lineup."

Whether this new band will last or not, and what impact it will have on the Cult's future, time will tell... although it has to be noted that Billboard describes the new Doors singer as "formerly of the Cult"

UPDATE: Original Doors drummer John Densmore has filed suit against Manzarek and Krieger about the new lineup, but the band continues to play some LA dates including a performance on "The Tonight Show," and Ian was interviewed briefly on "Extra" and "Access Hollywood." If nothing else, all this exposure may introduce some new fans to the Cult's music :)

UPDATE 2: Next Stewart Copeland filed a $1 million suit against Manzarek and Krieger claiming he was "dismissed without cause" in February 2002 (so much for that "permanent lineup"!) Copeland settled "amicably" in late May/early June, calling The Doors 21st Century "a great group" and citing Astbury as "really charistmatic."

UPDATE 3: The Litigation Follies continue: now Jim Morrison's estate has filed an 11-count trademark-infringement lawsuit against Manzarek, Krieger, et al, and so has Morrison's wife's estate.

psst Ian, it's not your karma to pay.. take it all as a sign to get back to the Cult where you belong

THE CULT ON VH1'S "BEHIND THE MUSIC"
VH1's series "Behind the Music" featured The Cult in a brand new,
up-to-date episode which debuted January 20, 2002!
It's a great hour with lots of comments and background from Ian, Billy, Matt, Billy M., and a few others, though not as many "outsider" contributions as most BTM episodes. Watch for reruns!

IAN INJURED AT SAN FRANCISCO SHOW

Towards the end of a nearly 1½ hour show at the Warfield on August 6, 2001, Ian told the crowd that something had "snapped" in his leg, and he was in obvious pain as he finished the two-song encore.

A roadie had to get a tambourine off the drum riser for Ian and he had to be helped offstage at the end of the show. But the vocals stayed as solid as they'd been throughout the high energy sold-out show, which included tunes from Beyond Good and Evil as well as Love, Electric, and Sonic Temple, along with favorites like "The Witch". The band was as tight as ever for the next-to-last show of their 3-month US tour, and although it seemed like there might have been some tension between Astbury and Duffy, it wasn't at all evident in the music.

Thanks to Ian, Billy, Matt, and the rest of the band and crew for another fantastic SF show! Ironically, opening act Monster Magnet had cancelled due to the singer's having broken his leg the night before. Stabbing Westward was also a no-show. We wish Ian well - apparently he tore his calf muscle - but they did perform in Las Vegas the following night.
