The Cult brought a new sound to the early 80s British rock scene. They had a light quality that the goth and post-punk bands of the day avoided, and a straight ahead rock base even as disco was taking over the mainstream.

The first album offers not only a historical perspective, but some good songs that have stood the test of time. It's not unusual to still hear Horse Nation or Spiritwalker at a Cult show.

Many songs clearly predict the guitar tones of Love which followed a year later, including the title track and the chorus of Go West (although its verse has an unexpected bossa nova vibe to it that shouldn't work, but does.)

An import version of this album includes three bonus tracks that make it worth the search if you can find it: the psychedelic-blues Bonebag, Sea and Sky, and Ressurection Joe (finally respelled for 2000's Pure Cult.)

"He was louder than the rest of the band put together. I liked him because he was a rock singer, not some mumbling Goth. I was a rock-orientated guitar player, which is why he liked me. He saw me playing Jimi Hendrix for a laugh at a soundcheck."

-- Billy Duffy (then with Theatre of Hate)
on first seeing Ian Astbury with Southern Death Cult
